Geologists confirm that Mount Mazama erupted and collapsed roughly 7,700 years ago, creating the six-mile-wide caldera that now cradles Crater Lake. The resulting lake has no inlet or outlet; its waters are replenished only by rain and snow, keeping them exceptionally pure and intensely blue.
