The Golden Temple, known as Harmandir Sahib, was founded in the late 16th century when Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru, completed the central shrine in 1604 atop the site of a sacred pool blessed by Guru Nanak. Amritsar itself grew around this sarovar, or pool of nectar, which legend holds was revealed in a vision and has been a place of healing and baptism for Sikhs ever since. The temple’s distinctive gold plating was added in the 19th century under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, transforming the marble structure into the luminous icon that floats upon the water today.

Real history records repeated destruction and rebuilding during Mughal conflicts, yet the spirit of the site endured through the Sikh community’s resilience and the daily practice of langar, the free communal kitchen that serves thousands.
