The Chronicle

Rising abruptly from the plains of Tamil Nadu, Arunachala has been venerated for millennia as one of India’s most powerful sacred mountains. Ancient Tamil texts describe it as the original form of Shiva, who appeared as an infinite column of fire to settle a dispute between Brahma and Vishnu. The present Arunachaleswarar Temple at its base dates back over a thousand years, its towering gopurams and stone corridors bearing witness to continuous worship through the Chola and Vijayanagara eras.

In the twentieth century the hill became world-famous through the presence of Sri Ramana Maharshi, who arrived as a teenager in 1896 and remained until his passing in 1950. He taught that Arunachala itself is the supreme teacher, radiating the silence in which the mind dissolves and the Self is revealed. His ashram still sits on the lower slopes, where visitors sit in the old hall and feel the same stillness he embodied.

When to go

Best time to visit: November to February — cooler dry season with comfortable daytime temperatures around 25–30°C; the summer months of April–June bring extreme heat above 38°C while June–September brings monsoon rains. The hill is quietest in January–February outside festival periods, yet busiest during the Karthigai Deepam festival in November/December when crowds swell dramatically.

Crystals to bring

Red Jasper — Red Jasper grounds the intense fire of the mountain into the physical body and heart, offering stability during deep stillness; carry it to feel anchored while the ego dissolves.

Clear Quartz — Clear Quartz amplifies the mountain’s transmission of silence and self-realization; place it on the heart or third eye while sitting at the caves to heighten clarity and connection to the Self.

Smoky Quartz — Smoky Quartz helps transmute heavy emotions released by Arunachala’s purifying fire into grounded peace; use it during circumambulation to stay centered amid intense energetic shifts.
